John “Calvin” King, 69, of Raleigh, went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, November 2, 2017 surrounded by family and friends at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Calvin was born November 21, 1947 in Rocky Mount, NC. He was a graduate of Red Oak High School, Pitt Community College and was a veteran of the US Air Force. He was employed as a Product Engineer with Alcatel-Lucent and in the electronic/telecommunication field for over 39 years. He was a devoted member of Swift Creek Baptist Church and a respected long-standing board member of Huntingwood Estates. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandkids; however, most times you would find him in “the yard”, tinkering with the hobby car (1966 Corvette), or grilling if he wasn’t escaping to the beach with the family!

Calvin was preceded in death by his father, Vernon King; and father-in-law, Merriett Rose

He is survived by his wife of almost 47 years, Jo Anne; daughter, Drs. Brooke Rawls and husband Bobby; grandchildren, Larkyn(10) and London(7) of Apex; mother, Lurene King; mother-in-law, Bell Rose; brother-in-law, Bobby Rose and wife Lorrain; brother-in-law, Todd Rose and wife Wendy; nephews Brandon and Steven Rose of Nashville, NC; as wells as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held 11am Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Swift Creek Baptist Church, 9300 Penny Road, Raleigh, NC 27606. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8pm Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St, Apex, NC 27502.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Swift Creek Baptist Church Building Fund or SECU Family House of Chapel Hill - http://www.secufamilyhouse.org/donate-now

So sorry to hear of Calvin's passing.
We are new to the community and barely knew him but we really appreciated that he took his time to make us feel welcome, even when he was obviously dealing with his own health issues. Wish we had moved here sooner to have known him better. Our condolences to his family and friends.

(You have a friend in me) was John Calvin King to everyone who knew him because, he had your back, he gave you support, he made you laugh, but most of all he made you happy. The beach trips to Topsail and Portsmouth island was fun but the fishing trip on the new river with (the skunks) and the rafting was life changing. Calvin's Friendship was really special to us and it will never be replaced. We will cherish those memories forever. Calvin's love and devotion to Joanne; his dedication to Brooke and Bobby and his happiness for his grandkids will not be matched. Bob Dylan who is my favorite music artist wrote one of the greatest songs of all time Knockin' On Heaven's Door Calvin that Door opened wide for you Thursday Night. Rest in peace my friend. Please accept our sincere condolences on the passing of your husband. You have lost someone very special, someone who touched many hearts. And those hearts will touch many more. And in that way, your loved one will always remain a part of you and a part of everything. May the family find peace during this most difficult time.

Mrs King, while I only met you once (you and Calvin were shopping for a comfortable recliner and so was I) your husband Calvin welcomed me to the neighborhood 18 yrs ago and he always helped me with any questions I have had regarding Huntingwood. Since I have not been active in the community, I always trusted him and named him in my voting ballot every year...if he happened to be out in the yard I made sure to compliment him on how beautiful he kept the yard. Calvin always had a pleasant, soothing and kind personality. I am deeply sorry for your loss and my prayers are with you and your family. Elena Chaimowicz, Huntingwood Neighbor

To JoAnn, Brooke and family. Victoria & I already miss Calvin "another" Red Oak good ole' boy. He was a kind man and from the wonderful family photo's a loving husband, a devoted father and an adoring granddaddy. You all are in our thoughts, our hearts and our prayers during this season of loss and grief. What a celebration there will be when we all get to heaven with Ransom and all the other Red Oak High School folks that have gone before us.
