Dr. John David Mauney III (David to all who knew him) of Apex NC died Saturday April 10, 2021 at home, aged 79. He was born March 17, 1942 in Lincolnton and grew up in Fayetteville, N.C. David graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill School of Medicine in 1983. Licensed in North Carolina and Virginia, he was a practicing psychiatrist and neurologist in the Raleigh area until just before his death. David graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1963 with an AB degree in Piano. He also held a Master’s Degree in Piano from East Carolina University. David studied at the School of Jazz in Lenox, Mass., Berklee School of Music in Boston, and with David Baker of the Jazz Department at the Indiana University School of Music. Following completion of his Masters of Music degree, he spent two years as a member of the faculty of the School of Music of Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.
Dr. Mauney spent several years in New York City during which time he served as pianist for the Freddy McCoy Quartet, the Carolyn Hester Coalition, and Miss Marge Dodson. In 1972-73, he served as the Musician-in-Residence for North Carolina State University, at which time he also completed a jazz television special with Bob Nardone filmed for WRAL-TV in Raleigh.
David was a kind and gentle man completely without malice. He was invariably friendly and helpful. He was an avid reader, and music was a passion for his entire life. Starting early in life he was confronted by a number of medical challenges which became more numerous and more serious in recent years. He accepted each challenge without complaint and battled and endured where others may have given up. He died where he would have wished, at home with his wife of twenty years. David will be missed and remembered.
David was preceded in death by: his parents, the Rev. Dr. John D. Mauney II and Mary Emma Cobb Mauney, a brother William Marshall Mauney, a sister Margaret Carolyn Mauney, and a stepdaughter Justin Mikel. He is survived by: his wife Margaret Ann Mauney, his children Quinna Mauney Hayes and her husband JP, John David Mauney IV, Miriam Mauney Enggas and her husband Ryan, and his grandchildren Mary-Quinn Hayes, Reese Hayes, and Ezra Enggas.
David also leaves behind: a brother Richard B. Mauney and his wife Mary Dunn Mauney of Asheville and their families, stepsons David Archer and Tony Anderson and wife Susan, and stepgranddaughters Katie and Molly Anderson.
A service to celebrate David’s life will be held at a later date.
