
John Alexander Mavroukakis, born on September 9th, 1937, in Athens, Greece, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2024. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved son of the late Alexander and Eleni Mavroukakis.
John is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Ann Mavroukakis, his stepdaughter Regina Bray-Brown (Aaron) and their two children Corbin and Lillian, his first wife Maryvonne and their 2 children, Eleni Jernell (Andrew) and Alexander Mavroukakis (Melissa), and his grandchildren: Alexandra Jernell, John Jernell, Sophia Mavroukakis, and Zoe Mavroukakis. He is also survived by his sister Maria Papaspyrou, nephew John Papaspyrou, and niece Irena Papaspyrou. He was preceded in death by several close relatives.
John often reminisced about his childhood, particularly the challenging and formative years during and after World War II. Despite the hardships, his passion for learning shone through; while other children might have spent their money on shoes, young John would return home with books, much to his mother’s surprise. John moved to the United States in 1957 after completing high school in Greece, served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1967, and became a naturalized citizen in 1963.
John became the first in his family to attend college, graduating with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland- College Park in 1969 and a Master’s of Science in Government and Business Administration from George Washington University in 1972. Fluent in multiple languages, he excelled academically and professionally. John served as a career Civil Servant, working over 35 years as a distinguished Contracting Professional at the US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). His superior work ethic and exceptional negotiation skills earned him numerous awards and promotions. He was also a dedicated mentor and coach, leaving a lasting impact on many of his colleagues.
Most importantly, John was a devoted father who prioritized his children above all else, mastering the art of single parenthood and becoming a skilled cook along the way. Upon retirement, he cherished spending extended periods in Greece, reconnecting with his roots.
Services will be held on July 27, 2024 at 11:30am at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Bethesda, Maryland, with subsequent internment at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in John’s name be made to a charity or organization of your choice, reflecting his generous and compassionate spirit.
