Joseph Richard “Dick” Stack passed away on Monday October 28, 2013 surrounded by those who love him at Waltonwood in Cary, NC. He was born July 6, 1938 in Baltimore, MD son of Evelyn Anna Graff and Stanley Richard Stack.
A Celebration of Dick’s life will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Apex United Methodist Church in Apex, NC. The “Northern Stacks” will host a memorial service for Dick at a later date.
Dick graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in Baltimore, MD; he then attended Towson State College and graduated in 1962; while there he played numerous sports. He was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame for soccer in 1982.
Dick started his teaching career at Hampstead Hill Middle School where he met his “Southern Belle” Emily Elizabeth Love. After years of banking, real estate, and insurance he eventually went back to the field he loved. He retired from teaching at Providence High School in Charlotte, NC in 2002.
Dick loved to read the newspaper every day, watch sports and follow the Carolina Panthers; however his favorite times were spent with his wife, daughters, and grandsons. He never missed an athletic event of his daughters even if it meant riding the bus with the team. In recent years he found great joy in watching his grandsons play soccer.
Dick and his wife Emily were married on August 12, 1967 at Memorial United Methodist Church in Kannapolis, NC. They have 2 children Heather (Jay) Banks of Charlotte, NC and Kara (Jeff) Hornada of Apex, NC. He is also survived by his 3 grandsons Gavin Douglas Banks of Charlotte, NC; Alexander Buck and Andrew Stack Hornada of Apex, NC. In addition, he is survived by his brother James Joseph “Murt” (Gail) Stack of Baltimore, MD; and his 2 nephews David (Treva) and Michael (Michelle) Stack both of Baltimore, MD.
His brother Murt had visited his “Hero” last week which brought a big smile to Dick’s face.
The family would like to personally thank the staff of Waltonwood in Cary, NC for their love and support which brought much comfort to Dick’s family.
