Kathy was born on April 13, 1940 in Winchester, MA to the late Alfred and Alice Doherty. A devoted mother of four, she worked tirelessly to make every house a home through multiple military moves. She was also an avid tennis player in her younger days and remained a huge sports fan throughout her life, cheering hardest for the Boston Red Sox, NC State Wolfpack and the Carolina Hurricanes. She enjoyed reading, crafts, decorating, crime/drama television and playing games on her computer. With enthusiasm and without hesitation, she would always say her proudest and most impactful contribution was raising her four children.
Her impact and influence extended well beyond her own family through her commitment to volunteerism and community service with her dedication to church and school activities, and Meals on Wheels. Whether she realized it or not, she was also helping shape the lives of her children’s friends. Her door was always open and the house was often lively and filled on the weekends with teens growing into adults, supported by that safe space she provided. And her Saturday afternoon tailgates at Carter-Finley Stadium were unquestionably epic. She absolutely adored her family, including her many pets.
Surviving are her sons, Mike, Chris (Rose) and Kevin (Kim); daughter, Michelle Pittelli (Chris); seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, several granddogs and great granddogs. She is predeceased by her husband, Brian Van Metre, her brothers, Al Doherty and Terry Doherty. She is survived by her sister, Pat Nemes, who she talked to on a daily basis for the past several years.
A Catholic Mass will be held in her honor on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 3008 Old Raleigh Rd. Apex NC 27502.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions can be donated to Transitions Lifecare Hospice or the COPD Foundation.
