

Kern Gilland Rose passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. Born on November 1, 1938 in Memphis, TN; he was the son of the late Charles and Emeline Rose. After serving in the US Army in military intelligence, he graduated from Ohio State University. He was employed with IBM, retiring after 25 years. He then worked with the State of North Carolina in internet security.
After retirement, Kern enjoyed volunteering for disaster relief with the NC Baptist Men. He traveled to Sri Lanka after the tsunami and to New Orleans and the Carolina Coast after the hurricanes. He also volunteered with the Jimmy V Association and the Susan G. Komen fundraising activities. He was also a volunteer chaplain at Wake Med and Rex Hospital, affectionately known as “Mr. Grumps”. Kern was an active member of Woodhaven Baptist Church.
Kern was preceded in death by brothers: Charles Rose, Jr. and James Rose.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Rose; daughters: Susan Thompson, Cynthia Kilpatrick and Kathryn Clarke; grandchildren: Gregory and Bradley Kilpatrick and Emily and Susan Clarke.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, February 28, 2016 from 1:30-3:00 pm at Apex Funeral Home, with a Memorial Service to begin at 3:00 pm in the funeral home chapel.
