Kur Tan Antono, a loving and loved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away in his home in Apex, NC on Saturday, January 28, 2023. He was 66 years old. He was surrounded by family, joined in prayer, until his final breath.
Kur was born on February 7, 1956 in Jakarta, Indonesia to Sanusi and Sri Antono. He grew up in Jakarta with his five brothers and sisters: Julyanti, Gunawan, Darmawan, Gustiningsih, and Wiryanto.
He came to the United States in 1974 to attend college at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. After surviving a blistery cold winter – weather he was unaccustomed to since growing up in a tropical country - Kur decided to transfer to the University of Missouri in St. Louis, where he earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
Upon graduating from the University of Missouri, Kur had difficulty attaining a job as an Aerospace Engineer and decided to transition to a career in finance. He completed a Master of Business Administration in Finance through Golden Gate University in San Francisco, CA. After graduating, Kur had a successful career as a banker in California and later in Indonesia.
It was in the Bay Area that he met his future wife, Patricia. Kur and Patricia were set up by his brother, Darmawan Antono, and sister-in-law, Luna Maryunani. Luna and Patricia were childhood best friends. Luna schemed to set up Patricia and Kur by sending Patricia batik dresses from Indonesia and asked Kur hand deliver it to her place in Oakland, CA. The rest - as they say - is history.
Kur and Patricia got married in El Cerrito, California in September 1986.
Kur moved in Apex, NC in 2007 after taking a job as the General Manager of International Wood Products, Inc. Moving to North Carolina was something he had never imagined but Kur quickly fell in love with Bojangles and the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was surprised and grateful to have found a large Indonesian Community in the Triangle.
For leisure, Kur enjoyed traveling, whether it was road trips across the US or flying to remote islands of the Indian Ocean. His favorite vacation was visiting Norway with his wife where they traveled from Oslo to Bergen and took in the breathtaking sights of the Scandanavian fjords. Kur was an avid sports fan, faithfully following the San Francisco 49ers. Even in his last few weeks of life, he enthusiastically watched his team in the playoffs with his sons.
Kur was a man of simple pleasures. He enjoyed grocery shopping – finding any excuse to walk up and down the aisles of Costco or Target. He showed his love for his wife through small everyday actions such as squeezing a lemon every morning for Patricia’s breakfast drink. He was selfless, always thinking about others and made sure he was a good provider to his wife and children.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Wiryanto Antono.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his three children, Brian, Andreas, and Amanda; his daughter in law, Chelsea; and his grandson Keegan.
