

Jan was born January 24, 1960 to the late John Robert Gray, Sr. and Grace Denney Gray. She was a graduate of Jordan High School in Durham and attended NC State University, Asheville Professional School of Real Estate and Alamance Community College. Jan had extensive knowledge as a North Carolina State Certified Real Estate Appraiser. She also enjoyed working as a customer service associate with Lowe's Home Improvement in Sanford.
Jan developed the Health Clinics that were conducted annually by the Durham Kennel Club at the dog shows conducted at the Fairgrounds. She coordinated the following vendors/services: lab work, microchip identification, eye and ear testing, and cardiology. This provided specialized healthcare for dogs from around the country. Jan was the DKC Obedience and Rally Trial Chairperson for Dec 2008, Dec 2009, Dec 2010, July 2012, and July 2013. Jan was the Seminar Chairperson from at least 2007 until she became ill. As Seminar Chairperson, Jan hired and coordinated bringing in National Thought Leaders on topics ranging from tracking, conformation and structure, vaccination protocols, obedience, retrieving for hunt tests, conditioning, agility, and nutrition. She was responsible for publicity, travel, managing the refreshments and meals for the Attendees and Speaker.
She was a long time former member of Central Carolina Poodle Club and served as recording secretary for a number of years, was hunt test chairman the first 5 years, served on the board of directors, and served as seminar chair for several years.
Jan was preceded in death by her sister, Jennifer Lea Gray.
She is survived by her sister, Karen Lane and her husband Wes of Cary; brother, John Robert Gray, Jr. and his wife, Yunhee of Apex; six nieces and nephews, Justin, Charity, Kristina, Katherine and Ethan Lane; and Rebekah Gray; she will also be missed by her dog companions, Rye, Drake, Hint and Rave.
A private graveside service will be held at Maplewood Cemetery, 1621 Duke University Road, Durham, NC 27701 on February 7, 2015.. A 2pm memorial service will follow at King's Park Church of Durham, 1305 Odyssey Drive, Durham, NC 27713. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
