It was at this time she decided to become a nurse and took her nurses training at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC.
At the start of WWII with other family members in the service she decided she wanted to do her part and thus with the consent of her parents joined the Army Nurse Corps in September of 1942. Like so many veterans she was very proud of her service to her country but rarely spoke about her experiences.
In November of 1945, Susan the first of three children was born followed by John in 1947 and Vicki in 1950. In 1949 her husband’s work as a civil engineer took her to Woodbury, NJ where she would remain a resident, raising her children and being involved in the community. She was a lifelong member of the Central Baptist Church. Here she served on many committees and enjoyed the fellowship of other members. She was an avid golfer and carried her own golf bag for 18 holes until in her late 70’s. She loved flowers and gardening, and dedicated herself to the beauty of her yard. The love of travel took Laura to many placed in the US and abroad. Most of all she loved her family and being with her grandchildren.
