Marie Schied, “Effie” as known to her siblings was born on August 22nd 1940 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Frederick and Madeline Schied. She was the third oldest of eight siblings Annie, Madeline, Mary, Helen, Freddy, George and Billy. Tragedy struck at the age of 10 with the loss of her beloved Father after which she and her older sisters became actively involved in helping her mom in caring for the younger siblings. She married in 1958 to John Vuytecki from Philadelphia and they had two children Lisa Marie and John Michael both born in Philadelphia. She and her children moved to North Carolina in the early 70’s where she later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and Finance. A lifelong Accountant & comptroller, Marie also had a passion for real estate and was a Licensed Broker for 40 years.
If you asked her what she liked the most about North Carolina it would always be Dean Smith and his North Carolina Tarheels. (sorry Roy) Marie had the privilege to retire at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill after many years of service working with grants at School of Public Health and Science where she loved the Tarheel family. She constantly reminded us she should have never retired at the age of 70.
Marie’s most important treasure was her relationship with Jesus Christ which she started when reading the book of I John at the age of 32 from a bible brought home from her children’s Vacation Bible School. She was a voracious reader of the Bible her entire life. Her love for Christ was prevalently expressed by her desire to always think of and care for others especially the less fortunate and her family. It brought her great joy to love and help others when at all possible. She had a peace from God that always guided and comforted her even up to her last breath on this earth. Her favorite day was Easter and although she is deeply missed we as her family are extremely grateful for her love, devotion and selfless sacrifice and are filled with somber joy knowing she will be celebrating this Easter in a most Spectacular way with her Savior.
Marie is survived by her two children, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Her daughter Lisa Marie Stansell, who lives in Durham and her two daughters. Julia McDonald, who lives in Hendersonville with Husband Neil and their children Mason and Boston. And Jennifer Langefeld who lives in Raleigh with her husband Eric and their children, Eva and Olivia. Marie’s son, J. Michael Vuytecki, lives in Cary with his wife Kimberly and children, Jonathan, Lauren, Madison, Aaron, Kaitlyn and Gracen.
In light of the current public health restrictions, Marie’s family will be holding a graveside service for immediate family members on Saturday April 11, 2020 at 2pm at Raleigh Memorial Cemetery. The family will hold a public memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest a donation to Samaritan’s Purse, Gideons International, or David Jeremiah Turning Point Broadcast.
