Nelson Maitland Brann, Sr., 82, known to many as “Podgie”, passed away Friday, January 31, 2014 at UNC Chapel Hill. Maitland lived 82 blessed years with very few health concerns until his last 2 weeks of life, challenged with two aneurisms and complications therein.

Maitland was born in Danville, VA growing up with a brother, HG Brann and sister, Jewel. He met the love of his life, Laura Ann Jones in 1949 and they began the most beautiful journey together in marriage in 1951. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War.

Maitland worked for Jesse Jones Sausage Co. in Danville, beginning his career as route salesman, driving every back road in the state of VA, making Jesse Jones a household name. Later as Sales Manager, Jesse Jones distribution spread from VA to NC and SC. Jesse Jones sold to General Mills in 1967 and operations moved from Danville to Garner, NC and all the family moved to the Raleigh area. Maitland was VP of Sales for Jesse Jones Products, operating under Goodmark Foods, Inc. Maitland retired in 1989 with 39 years in service.

Maitland loved his family beyond measure. He loved his friends sharing many great times and made wonderful memories over all these years. He loved antique cars and he loved playing golf the past 34 years at MacGregor Country Club.

Maitland is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Laura Ann Jones Brann; son, Nelson Maitland “Nim” Brann, Jr. and his wife Kelly; daughter, Kathy Brann; grandsons, Coleman Maitland and Gordon Vincent Brann; sister, Jewel Brann Riddle; sister-in-law, Franny Gourly Brann; brother-in-law, Cassill William “Billy” Jones, Jr. and wife, Shelby; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at White Plains United Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 5th, at 12 noon. Following, there will be a reception and visitation with family in the Fellowship Hall.

I miss you.
Everyone is adjusting, not 'good as new' but you would be pleased and proud!
It's, as you understand, not the same!
I'm sure you are enjoying Heaven.
Play well.... My Friend!

Laura Ann and family, Brendan and I were very sorry to hear of Podgie's passing. We've all lost such a special friend. I always think of both of you so fondly, and remember you both giving us our official Honorary Southerner pass, so many years ago! I will miss seeing Podgie around town and at HT, but I will always remember his kindness, and his beaming smile. The service was lovely. He may have found the Heavenly Pond, and Majestic Acres Golf Couse, but I'm sure he still has a twinkle in his eye for Laura Ann. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mrs. Brann,
I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Brann's passing. He was always one of my favorite people growing up, always quite the entertainer with a wonderful smile & laugh! Although I haven't seen either of you in many years, I think of you both fondly! May the memories you share with him bring you comfort during this tough time. Keeping you in my thoughts!

Mrs. Brann,
My prayers go out to you and your family. I so enjoyed bumping into Mr. Brann around town where he would keep me updated on his family, our past neighbors, and of course, his Chevy truck, all of which he loved and took great pride in. I will always cherish his stories and his sincere interest in my family, and am blessed to have had such a wonderful neighbor for life!

Laura Ann,
Our thoughts are with you and your family at this sad moment. Two thoughts: MacGregor will never be the same without Podge and we all know that only red hot dogs will be served in heaven from now on. Ann & Paul Brunswick

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and well preserved piece, but to skid across the line broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out, shouting… Thank you Lord!" & Our Friend did a very good job! Tracy
