Hello, my name is Michael James Burkhart the biological father of Krais.  Phyllis Elizabeth Brown adopted my son Calgary Michael Burkhart when he was just a baby.  Though we are all grown up now and many years have passed, I wanted to send a special THANK YOU FROM THE HEART to Phyllis.  Though her and I never met, I have faith in God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Almighty, that she will get this message and understand my gratitude.  I know, from personal experience, how difficult it is to be a single parent and make everything work together like a well oiled machine.  THANK YOU PHYLLIS!!  I will be forever grateful and always consider you family.  See you in Heaven soon when I am sure we will be allowed to meet for the first time and share so many memories. I am so saddened to hear of the loss of Phyllis.  I have always loved working with her five talented kids and as a parent and as an actress onstage she was a joy to work with.   I have so many fond memories of working on different shows and the love she had for her children was evident in all she did throughout her life.  I found out tonight of her passing - never knowing this and finding out so late - I would just like to say on behalf of her theatre family at Sampson Community Theatre and her Angela’s Musical Troupe family who have loved going to Disney and performing with Adam for years, we truly are at a loss - she was such a hard worker, a caring giving woman and a dear friend to all. Phyllis will be greatly missed and I will be praying for her family and friends during this time.

I am deeply sorry and share my feelings of sadness in Phyllis´ passing with you.  I enjoyed my conversations with Phyllis, especially one we had in 2001 at a family reunion as we spoke about how  wonderful it is to help children in need.  Phyllis´s life of love for others speaks out a vibrant testimony to me.  I am grateful for her life of love.  I am thankful for Phyllis and for her service. 

My heart goes out to Krais, Alex, Danielle, Ryan and Adam.  I am praying for each of you, that you may feel Jesus in you.  He goes with you every step of the way, always.

I’ve worked with Ms. Brown for several years as our school’s social worker. She was kind, approachable and most of all, willing to be of help in whatever capacity she could serve. Her work was most likely for her “a true calling” and not just a job. To me, the other aspects of her life such as adopting children and working in search and rescue with her beloved  dog are all just pieces of a larger puzzle that was her life - a life of service, kindness, gratitude and a true desire to make her part of the world a better place. The difference between Phyllis and other people is that she truly went beyond just wishing she could make a positive difference but in actually making one by her life’s actions. Ms. Brown will be missed by so many whose lives she touched, even in the smallest ways. May her special angels protect, comfort and guide her family in this time of immense grief and give strength to the children she adopted to be all that she hoped they would be.

I am saddened to hear I will not see Ms. Brown walking her dog & her younger son. I live across the street from her & she was a dear young woman.  We would always wave when we saw each other in passing .  I would always call her Ms. Brown & tell her, I didn’t realize you were that short, but we were about the same height.  I will miss her & I pray you find comfort & peace knowing that others care & Jehovah God has promised a resurrection to life-John 5:28,29.

I remember at Christmas your willingness to always sing  “Santa Claus Is Coming  To Town” and joining in on the fun. Your sense of humor and your many gifts  will be missed.  Continued prayers for the family. 

Thank you, Phyllis, for always caring for the students at all of your schools. I will miss your smile and laugh. 

Encore Entertainment extends our condolences to the family. We enjoyed our time singing and performing together with Phyllis. 

Phyllis was dedicated to the Early College Academy family. Her compassion to the students that she served spoke volumes to the size of her heart.  She leaves a void that will be hard to fill. We will ever cherish the fond memories that have been planted in the halls of ECA by such a warm heart. Never forgotten. 

Phyllis was a colleague at Smithfield Middle School, who had a gentle and sweet spirit.  I spoke with her on last Wednesday in her office.

during these sad times.  May God continue to heal and encourage you through these difficult times.  She will be missed at Smithfield Middle School, Home of the Mighty Knights. 



Coastal Carolina Search Team members extend their deepest sympathies. Phyllis and K9 Kai were loved team members and our hearts are heavy knowing Phyllis is no longer with us. But we rejoice in the knowledge that we will all be together again with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  We will continue to give our best efforts in SAR knowing that Phyllis is cheering us on.  

It is hard to find the right words to express the deepest sympathy for this tragic loss. Phyllis was a kind soul and eager to explore ways to help children in our community and school. She will certainly be missed, but those special moments and memories she shared with each of us will be everlasting. 

I am so sorry for your loss.  Phyllis was a great volunteer and friend to the community.  She will be missed.

Phyllis and I worked together at Cherry Hospital.  She loved being a social worker and helping others.  She loved all her foster children.  Prayers for her family
