Phyllis was born on October 19, 1947 to the late Floyd Douglas and Mildred Nutt. She was a precocious child known for her bravery, curiosity, and strong will. She and her younger sister Willadean had a lifelong close relationship. She married her high school sweetheart, Wayne Womble, while attending NC State University and finished her studies with a Master’s Degree in counseling. She went on to be a guidance counselor for 34 years at Fuquay Middle School where she touched many lives and left a legacy of patience and understanding.
Phyllis was as sweet as the sweet tea she so famously loved. She was a strong woman of faith who lived a life of devotion to her family, friends, and students. She had a keen sense of adventure and loved communing with nature, especially in the mountains. She had an affinity for flowers and a gift for making them flourish. She was an avid reader, puzzler, and crafter. She had an epic love story and was married for 47 years. She and Wayne were perfect partners for one another. Wayne had a big personality and she knew just how to handle him. Phyllis was known for her kindness. She was always on the go enjoying life and cherishing family. The sudden loss of Wayne in 2016 took a great toll on her. She persevered through the last 7 years of her life with the support and love of family.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Wallace “Wayne” Womble Jr., her sister-in-law, Bertie Womble, and her brother-in-law Ethan Mayes.
She is survived by her daughter, Jodi (Matthew) Gore, her son, Jeffrey (Lauren) Womble, her sister, Willadean Mayes; grandchildren, Charlotte, Miller and Weldon Gore, Cecelia Womble, Luke and Savannah Brennan, and beloved nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Monday, November 6, 2023 from 10:00am to 11:30am at New Hill Baptist Church The funeral service will begin at 11:30am. Burial will follow where Phyllis will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be donated to Womble Institute for Neurodiversity, 1152 Executive Circle Suite 100 Cary NC 27511, an organization Phyllis personally helped to launch in 2018.
