Dr. Azam has been a member of the Research Triangle Jama’at in North Carolina since its inception. Born in pre-partition India in 1934, he accepted the truth of Islam Ahmadiyya under the auspices of Ḥazrat Muṣleḥ Mau‘ud (may Allāh be pleased with him) at an early age, which also necessitated a separation from his non-Ahmadi family.
An ardent academic, he continued his education on scholarships and moved to work in England in the early 1960s. He relocated with his family to the United States and settled in North Carolina in 1978, before any formal Jama’at had been established in the region.
Dr. Azam served as the Research Triangle Jamaat’s local Imam for many years and regularly delivered speeches and Dars-ul-Quran and also lead the weekly Friday services. His home was used as a regular venue for the Friday services before the Jama'at formally acquired a center. He is also known by many in the USA community for the regular contribution of articles and poems he made for many of the Jama’at publications as well as his involvement in various capacities locally and nationally.
He leaves behind two sons and their families, including 9 grandchildren and a great grandson. He was a Moosie. May Allah grant him a lofty station near Himself and enable his loved ones to bear his loss with patience, Ameen.
A visitation for Rasheed will be held Thursday, September 29, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W Williams St, Apex, NC 27502, followed by a prayer service at 7:00 PM.
