Rick attended the University of Arizona for his undergraduate studies before being commissioned as an officer in the United States Army, where he served as a captain during a tour in Vietnam. After leaving the Army, he pursued graduate studies in psychology and began his career as a school psychologist with Cumberland County Schools. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in School Psychology from North Carolina State University. Rick spent much of his adult life in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he later transitioned to private practice at the Fayetteville Family Life Center. There, he spent decades supporting children and adults through some of life's most difficult moments, holding a particular passion for working with fellow veterans, helping them process and heal from their experiences of war. In 2007, Rick moved to Apex, North Carolina. Reflecting the depth of his faith, he later went on to earn a Master of Divinity from Campbell University.
Rick's faith was deeply personal and central to who he was. He was an active and devoted member of his church, serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and leader on numerous committees over the years.
Outside of his work and ministry, Rick was an avid stamp collector and a lifelong model railroader, a hobby he pursued for as long as his family can remember, always with the dream of one day seeing his layout featured on the cover of Model Railroader.
Rick was, quite simply, one of the good guys. He carried a strong sense of justice, loved his people fiercely, and never stopped learning and growing — qualities that shaped him as a soldier, a psychologist, a person, and above all, a husband, father, and grandfather.
Rick was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Hollings. In 2014, he married Jane Hollings, who survives him. He was also predeceased by his parents, Bertram "Bert" Hollings and Ester "Belle" Hollings, and his sister, Joan Estes. In addition to Jane, he is survived by his daughter, Mary Whitehouse (Al) and stepdaughter, Cathy DelPrete (Keith); his grandsons, Ryan and Tres Whitehouse and Lincoln and Benjamin DelPrete; and his sister, Marilyn Bigelow, of Oro Valley, Arizona, niece Tammy Folsom (Randy), and nephew Scot Bigelow.
A memorial service will be held at Butler Chapel at Campbell University on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Save the Children in Rick's memory.
