Steve was born on March 29, 1937, in Uniontown, PA, to the late Frank and Mary Veno. This past December, he celebrated 65 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Jacquelyn, with whom he raised three children and was blessed with six grandchildren.
Steve received his commission into the Marine Corps at his college graduation. He was an officer for 20 years serving two tours of duty in Vietnam and retiring as a major in 1978. Upon his retirement from the Marine Corps, Steve began his second career as an instructor in Junior ROTC and adult education where he helped individuals obtain a GED, as well as assist those who wanted to improve their adult basic education skills. He felt great joy and accomplishment when making a positive impact on a young person’s life.
Steve enjoyed adventure and many outdoor activities including biking, snow and water skiing, boating, fishing, bocce, and gardening. He helped organize various landscaping projects around St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, obtaining Fourth Degree status. For Steve, a change in duty station was not just part of his obligation as a Marine. He would turn it into a family adventure that included cross-country trips to the new duty station with stops along the way to see what America had to offer. Once in a new location, the family spent time exploring a new area of the country.
Being a member of the Knights built upon Steve’s life-long commitment to charitable service and his unwavering Catholic faith that began as a young altar server at his local parish. He was generous with time, a great mentor, and a man of integrity. He will be missed greatly by family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son James Veno and his brother, Francis Veno.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Jacquelyn Veno; daughter, Christa Richie, and her husband, Steve; son, David Veno and his wife, Anne Marie; daughter-in-law, Sandy Veno; granddaughter, Caitlin Veno and her husband, Steve Jonkman; grandson, Justin Veno and his wife, Vitoria; grandson, Ryan Veno and his wife, Monica; grandson, Will Ritche; grandson, Kevin Veno; and granddaughter, Corin Veno; sister, Mary Moxin; brother, Joseph Veno.
A funeral mass in honor of Stephen will be held on Monday, August 12, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Apex, NC. He will be laid to rest immediately following the service in the columbarium at the church.
