Born on March 3, 1950, in Richmond, Virginia, Thomas “Tom” Pinckard Haynie was the son of Edward Long Haynie, Sr. and Kathleen Pinckard Haynie. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Tom shared a lifetime of love and partnership with his wife of 53 years, Ellen “Arlene” Dunn Haynie.
Tom’s career with McDonald’s spanned more than fifty years, beginning in 1968 in Hampton, Virginia. Over the decades, he served in a variety of leadership roles across the Southeast—including Field Consultant, Business Consultant, and Regional Training Manager—before realizing his dream of becoming an Owner/Operator. In 1990, Tom and his wife, Arlene, founded KTL McDonald’s, named after their three children, Katie, Tommy, and Lauren, and went on to own and operate several restaurants throughout central North Carolina. Though he earned many awards and accolades during his distinguished career, Tom found his greatest fulfillment in mentoring others, working alongside his family, and serving his community.
Outside of work, Tom was an avid sports fan and a loyal supporter of the Carolina Hurricanes and the University of Virginia. He found joy in family vacations, cheering from the sidelines, and coaching his children in their various sporting events over the years. In later years, he loved nothing more than watching his grandchildren play sports or perform and celebrating their accomplishments. Whether watching a game, spending time on vacation, or simply being surrounded by family, Tom’s happiest moments were those shared with the people he loved most.
Tom was deeply committed to giving back, supporting local schools, athletic programs, and community organizations in Apex, Lillington, and Dunn. His generosity, humility, and dedication touched countless lives.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Arlene Haynie; his daughter, Katie Caggia (Peter Caggia); his son, Tommy Haynie (Shannon Haynie); his daughter, Lauren Haynie; and five cherished grandchildren: Chris Caggia, Brendan Caggia, Ashlyn Haynie, Jack Haynie, and Makenly Haynie.
Tom will be remembered for his integrity, work ethic, and unwavering devotion to his family and community. His smile, wisdom, and kindness will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
A service to celebrate Tom’s life will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 11 a.m. at The Apex Funeral Home. Visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Triangle or the Apex Public School Foundation in his honor.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the teams at UNC REX Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center of Apex and Transitions LifeCare for their compassionate care and support.
