

Walter was the only child of Stewart and Edna Church of Mt. Savage, MD, where his love of fly fishing and sports developed.
He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, including having served during the Vietnam War. After graduating second in his class from the U.S. Naval School of Electronics, he was awarded a letter of commendation for outstanding leadership at the U.S. Naval Radio Station at Lualualei, Honolulu.
Walter and his wife Martha are members of Unity of the Triangle in Raleigh. He was a member of the American Legion, Cary Post 0067. He retired from IBM after 30 years of service spanning four states. His last assignment brought him to NC , where he made his forever home.
While appreciating all God's gifts, he especially loved nature, the healing arts, and music.
He was a lifelong Yankees fan, member of the Wolfpack club, and dedicated NASCAR follower.
Walter is survived by his wife of 26 years, Martha, and precious companion Shiwa (his 3rd Lhasa Apso), of the home, and children Laura (Bob Hackman), Mike, Matt, and Cortney Lynster (Bill). He is also survived by nieces Louri Hannan (Tim), Wendy Vandewater (Tom), and nephew Al Weaver (Maria); grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great nieces and nephews. He loved them all beyond measure.
The family wishes to thank Walter's beloved personal caregivers and Transitions LifeCare of Raleigh for their tireless care and support.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Apex Funeral Home with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Walter's name may be made to Unity of the Triangle in Raleigh or to the SPCA of Wake County.
