William (“Bill”) Emmert Swigart, III passed away peacefully from natural causes on Thursday, December 13, at the age of 76 at WakeMed Cary Hospital in Cary, North Carolina. Both of his sons were with him at the time of his passing.
Mr. Swigart was born on July 30, 1942 in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania and lived there throughout his childhood. He served in the army for several years, and earned his paratrooper wings while assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Mr. Swigart spent most of his adult life in the Providence, Rhode Island area, and was the Director of Continuing Education at Rhode Island College for more than 30 years. He moved to Apex, North Carolina about a year before his passing so he could be cared for by one of his sons.
Mr. Swigart is preceded in death by his parents, William Emmert Swigart, Jr., and Helen Elizabeth Fetterhoof. He is survived by his sons, James (“Jim”) Robinson Swigart of Apex, North Carolina and William (“Bill”) Emmert Swigart, IV of Carmel, Indiana, and by his three grandchildren, Preston Landis Swigart, of Apex, North Carolina, and Claire Elise Swigart and William (“Will”) McGregor Swigart, both of Carmel, Indiana. He is also survived by all three of his siblings: Anne Swigart McAllister of Arlington, Virginia, Jeffrey (“Jeff”) Fetterhoof Swigart of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and Susan Swigart Porter of Plymouth, Michigan.
Mr. Swigart requested that he be cremated and his family will hold a private memorial to scatter his ashes in accordance with his wishes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation (www.parkinson.org).
