Marjorie Lavon Mims passed away peacefully on June 30th, 2026, at the age of 81, just a few weeks shy of her 82nd birthday. Lavon, as many knew her, was born on July 21st, 1944, in Freeport, Texas, but grew up in Louisiana.
Many of her childhood stories involved her experiences as a tomboy living near the bayou and later below New Orleans in Port Sulfur. She reminisced about her family trips and local crawfish boils. She moved to California in her twenties.
She touched the lives of many and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her siblings Barbara Deming, Ralph Mims, and Rebecca Morgan and children Amy Azul and husband Noel Azul of Victorville, California; Benjamin Eskew of Los Angeles, California; and Beverly Eskew of Running Springs, California. She also leaves behind 6 grandchildren: Orion Manning, Elijah Azul, Katherine Azul, John Azul, Leah Azul, and Maximilian Azul.
Lavon’s life was characterized by her strong convictions. She was known for her social work in Pomona, California, at Los Angeles County Social Services where she retired after 25 years. She was a longtime resident of Riverside County but moved to the High Desert in 2014 to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
She will be remembered for her homemade baked goods and beautiful voice she shared with her faith community among others.
