Mary Cathryn Stephens

Mary Stephens passed away peacefully on July 16th, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on March 3rd , 1935, she led a life full of service to others. She became a registered nurse and worked in numerous capacities throughout her career: emergency room, director of nursing at two hospitals, and manager of several different medical clinics. She served was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and gave countless hours of compassionate service to fellow members and neighbors. Mary loved the Scouting program and worked alongside her first husband Leon Nansel to teach 100s of young men the skills and values of Scouting.

Mary’s greatest service was given to her family. As the youngest of 6 and a nurse by profession, she felt deeply the responsibility to care for her family. She took her mother and sister into her home during the waning years of their lives. She also cared for Leon as he struggled with dementia, eventually passing away at home.However, Mary was not destined to live out her years alone.

In 2010, Mary married a close family friend, Harold “Doc” Stephens. The two of them continued the legacy of loving service to family and friends. This union expanded the family circle which brought great joy in her life. Doc has been a heaven-sent blessing for Mary, especially as he has patiently cared for her as her health declined.

Her life of service and the example she set for her family has spread the love of the Savior through the world, literally. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have taken and will continue to take the message of Jesus to the world. She was an irresistible force for good, touching the lives of many and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
