Oliver Alvin Merseburgh was born in Kapa‘au, Hawaii to Oliver and Beatrice Merseburgh. He was one of four children, where he grew up in a family of doers learning to farm, fish, and create everything, becoming a true jack of all trades. He ultimately fell in love with woodworking, spear fishing with his cousins, and playing music every chance he got. He played hookey from school just to fish, and would generously share everything he caught with his friends and family. When he did attend school, he formed a band and became affectionately known as, “Elvis.” At school reunions years later, many people would come running to him calling, “Elvis”, reminiscing over the musical joy he brought to every event. He took on the role of a provider, whether it was food, care, or support, he cherished his family and friends, starting from a young age.
When Oliver knew he was about to be drafted, he enlisted in the navy with hopes of becoming a fireman. Instead, he was given a boiler room billet and made BT 3 in rank. Ultimately, it set him up for career success when a fellow sailor mentioned that it was a good job on the outside working in a power plant. He was hungry for knowledge, learning every skill he could from electrical work to plumbing, from every other person on the ship. When Oliver’s enlistment ended, he found work at the Glendale Power Plant, and moved close to his sister, Eleanor, in Altadena, CA, where he soon met and fell in love with his wife, Margaret. After marrying, they would have two children, Lanae Lani and Pualani, and seven grandchildren. Oliver and Margaret were married for 55 years until Margaret's passing in 2023.
Once Oliver retired, he moved to Apple Valley where he would reside until his passing. Throughout the course of his life, he would foster a community around him based on mutual love and respect. He was a role model, teacher, friend, family man, and father-figure to many. His beautiful creations, time, knowledge and love was given freely with his whole heart, leaving lasting memories to remember him by. He was and is deeply loved and will be missed by all.
