Ron was born on August 18, 1937, in Muncie, Indiana. After graduating from Muncie Central High School, he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960. His service to our country was something he carried with pride throughout his life.
After leaving the Air Force, Ron moved to Sylmar, California, where he bought his first home and began a career in the glass manufacturing industry. He spent 45 years working hard to provide for his family, believing that if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing right.
In 1986, Ron moved to Victorville and made Spring Valley Lake his home. After retiring in 2007, he settled into what many of us considered his favorite job. If you were looking for him, there was a good chance you’d find him sitting in his garage with a cold beer, watching football or NASCAR, waving at neighbors, and keeping an eye on everything happening on the street. We all jokingly called him the neighborhood watch, and everyone who knew him would agree he took that role seriously.
More than anything, Ron loved his family.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Loretta; his children, Scott, Chris, and Salli; his stepson, Ernest Barbour; his sisters, Beverly Winters and Shirley Capps; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He also carried the memory of his late stepsons, Michael and David Barbour, close to his heart.
As a husband, father, and grandpa, he showed his love through the things he did every day. If someone needed help, Ron was there. It didn’t matter if it was family, a friend, or a neighbor. He never hesitated to lend a hand, offer advice, or fix whatever needed fixing. You always knew you could count on him.
Some of my favorite memories are the simple ones, spending time with him, hearing his stories, watching a game together, or just hanging out in the garage. Those moments may have seemed ordinary at the time, but they’re the memories we’ll hold onto forever.
The measure of a person’s life isn’t found in what they owned or how long they lived. It’s found in the people they loved, the lives they touched, and the memories they leave behind. By that measure, Ron lived a remarkable life.
While we’ll miss seeing him in his garage and hearing his voice, we’ll carry his example with us. His kindness, his work ethic, his sense of humor, and his love for his family will continue to live on through all of us.
