Born in 1933, she passed away quickly and suddenly on January 6, 2024, at the age of 90. In the weeks and months leading up to her death, "Miss Sandra" complained about feeling "so weak," but she didn't really know why. She always paid close attention to what she was eating. She was still driving to get her own groceries. Still cooking her own meals, paying her bills on-time, walking, talking, and going to Church on Sundays.
She was born in Mississippi, but was raised in Fort Worth, Texas by her parents, Alexander and Agatha Thomas. Sandra was very well read. Meaning, she read everything! She did very well in school. She could have graduated from I.M. Terrel High school as a sophomore at 15 years old. However, she was encouraged to stay in school for another year, which she did.
She married soon after high school and had two sons, Valentine Michael and Gordon Alexander. She managed a flower shop and later owned it. After a few years she and her husband divorced, and she and the boys moved to California. She worked at Naval Hospital for several years where she met and later married Colbert Munson Jr. They had a son, Scott Thomas, in 1967.
Over the course of 6 decades in California, Miss Sandra Earned a Real Estate license and "SOLD" real estate. She went to school for Restaurant Management, and later owned her own restaurant: MUNSON'S BAR-B-QUE
Sandra became very active in her High Desert Communities of Apple Valley and Victorville. She was a member of NCNW, National Council of Negro Women. She was Treasurer with the Apple Valley Football Program, and she also served on the Grand Jury in San Bernardino for more than a Decade.
After her husband died in 2013, Sandra eventually moved to Logan, Utah to be closer to family. She had lived independently in Utah for the last 5 years until her abrupt departure in January. She dearly missed her California friends.
Sandra Lee Munson was a Faithful servant of the Lord. A loyal hard-working member of the Churches she's belonged to in her life, and a Wonderful Cook. She tithed “religiously” to her church even while spending 6 months in the hospital after a surgery. Sandra died because she's been a faithful servant of both GOD and her Fellow Man for most of 90 years. Ten of those years with only 1 kidney. She had done enough in this life. Her body was tired. And so...when no one was looking, The LORD slipped Miss Sandra out the back-door of this life, quickly and painlessly. HE probably said something like,
"WELL PLAYED MISS SANDRA. YOU DONE GOOD!"
Sandra is survived by her only remaining son, Scott; six grandchildren: Gordon Jr., Sacheen, Jordan, Sirius, Nile, and India; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at:
