Bill’s journey began on January 2nd, 1936 in Pasadena, CA. where he grew up and attended McKinley Jr. High School and then went to P.C.C. (Pasadena City College). Bill served 4 years in the Navy reserve and went active duty from 1955 to 1958. He then met and married the love of his life Joan Keifer in 1959. They settled down and raised their family of four in the city of West Covina where they lived for 29 years. Bill retired after 33 years as a journeyman electrician and was a member of the IBEW local 11 for fifty years.
Bill and his wife loved the high desert and moved to Apple Valley in 1991. Bill was very active in the West Covina Elks and also the Victorville Elks as well as the D.A.R.E. program. He dedicated 42 years of service in total and was the youth appreciation chairman as well as district chairman. Bill had a passion for helping kids of all ages in the community.
Bill took up golf and made many new friends on the course and a “perfect golf,” game he said, would be to “shoot his age.” He loved telling golf jokes and making his friends laugh. He also loved road trips and would load the family up in the truck and camper and head out to the Eastern Sierras where he would teach all the kids to fish, clean them, and eat them. Then he would play guitar and sing songs around the campfire. Bill referred to these times as his best memories.
Later in life, he and his wife cruised as often as they could with friends and family or just the two of them. He sure loved a “good deal” on a cruise. Bill Whitney has left his heart print on many; he is remembered for his compassionate heart, treating everyone he met fairly, he had a great sense of humor, as well as having the ability to fix anything. He was a loving husband and an amazing Father as well as a fun-loving Grandpa.
Bill Whitney passed away peacefully at the age of 82 in his home on June 4th, 2018 while surrounded by his family. Bill is survived by his wife Joan and his daughters Kathy Jo and Kristine, and son Mark along with his 7 Grandchildren. Bill joins his daughter Kimberly in eternal rest.
Bill is off on another adventure and I’m sure he will find something to fix, and instead of breaking bread with the Lord, he’s making him bread pudding along with playing guitar for him, as well as enjoying “the perfect golf game” and laughing with his sisters and daughter. To say he will be missed is an understatement, but we will take him in our hearts everywhere we go.
A celebration of life will be held on July 15th at 10am at Sunset Hills Memorial Park 2400
Waalew Rd. Apple Valley, CA. and a reception will follow at the Aspen Club House in Del Web Sun City.
