Ann Hughes Innes, age 102, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on November 25, 2020. Affectionately known as “Mama Ann” to family and friends alike, she said she never ex-pected to live so long, but those who knew her would credit her good humor and faith as her secret to becoming a centenarian and the oldest resident of her retirement center.
Mama Ann was born September 6, 1918 in Athens, Alabama to Dr. John Frederick Hughes and Mona P. Hughes. As a young girl, her family traveled via train from Alabama to live in the Tex-as panhandle. She graduated Valedictorian at the age of 16 from Roaring Springs High School, and subsequently attended the University of Alabama and Texas Christian University before earning her degree in English from the University of Texas. A life-long lover of education, she taught for 35 years in Spur, Texas, first as an elementary school teacher and then as district Li-brarian. She moved to Arlington in 2007 to be near her daughters.
Mama Ann loved reading, playing bridge, eating chocolate and completing The New York Times crossword puzzle every day. A stylish dresser, Mama Ann’s favorite song was “Sophisticated La-dy” and she had wonderful memories of dancing her way through college.
She was preceded in death by her sister Mona Hughes Sherwood and daughter Harriet Farmer Rast.
She is survived by daughter Diana Young and husband Roger; nephew Fred Sherwood and wife Karen; grandchildren Chris Young and wife Kristina; Jeffrey Young; Suzanne Farmer and partner Kim Tyer; Betsy Gekiere and husband Roger; and great-grandchildren Colby Young, Avery Young, Kathleen Gekiere and Jon Robert Gekiere.
The family would like to thank the staff at Atria Lake Arlington, and Mama Ann’s devoted care-givers, especially Lysa Dunson, who was with her for over a decade.
In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Ann Hughes Innes are encouraged to Walton Elemen-tary Book Fund, Fort Worth ISD, Attn: Library Media Services, 3150 McCart Avenue, Fort Worth, TX 76110.
