Bernice was born February 5, 1925 to Homer and Cleta Riggs in Saint Louis, Missouri. She met her future husband, Joseph (Joe) Kurtz, at a skating rink in Saint Louis. They later married on June 7, 1947 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. They spent 73 happy years together and epitomized love and devotion.
Bernice was an adoring and adored wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Her family was her greatest passion in life. She left a legacy of love and kindness and she will be truly missed by all who knew her.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Cleta Riggs; brother, Richard Riggs; son, Richard Michael Kurtz; and granddaughter, Tiffany Darlene Kurtz.
Survivors: husband, Joseph Kurtz; children, Sandra Niswonger and husband, Wendell, and Joseph Kurtz, Jr. and wife, Darlene; grandchildren, Bryan Kurtz and wife, Tonya, Scott Niswonger and wife, Ana, Wendy Jo Mery and husband, Jeff, and Todd Niswonger; great-grandchildren, Bryton, Mackenzie, and Samantha Kurtz, and Cooper and Skyler Mery; sister, Judith Mayfield and husband, Paul; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
