Dorothy Byers Kunkel lived a life of love, kindness, laughter, and devotion to her family. Born on July 2, 1930, in Temple, Texas, to Joseph and Levora Byers, Dorothy was the kind of person who made life brighter for those around her.
While attending Temple High School, she met Harold Kunkel, the love of her life. Their relationship grew into a marriage that lasted 62 wonderful years, built on love and a lifetime of shared memories. Together, they built a family that became Dorothy's greatest joy.
To everyone else she was Dorothy or Dot. To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was Mee-Mee.
Every morning began with a strong pot of coffee. If you called, she would happily spend time catching up. She loved talking with family and friends, keeping up with everyone's lives, and never missed an opportunity to check in on the people she loved.
Mee-Mee had a wonderful sense of humor and a way of making people laugh. She was fun to be around, quick with a smile, and especially loved being with her grandchildren. Time spent with her was never rushed or complicated. It was simply comfortable, joyful, and full of love.
Her kitchen was a way she kept tradition alive...homemade chicken soup at Christmas, black-eyed peas at New Years, chicken fried steak, famous egg and bacon sandwiches, and the prune cake on the table at get togethers. She had a gift for making people feel cared for, whether through a meal, a hot cup of coffee, or simply her presence.
Dorothy also found joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved playing the piano, square dancing, a good game of dominoes, cheering on her beloved Dallas Cowboys, and listening to country music. The Oak Ridge Boys, George Strait, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson were always playing somewhere in the house. She never met a cat she didn't want to care for, whether it was one of her own or a stray looking for a meal. In her later years, her dog Buddy was never far from her side.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Levora Byers; her brother, Jay Byers; and her beloved husband of 62 years, Harold Kunkel.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Brenda Horton and her husband, Jim Horton, and Kathy VanSice; her grandchildren, Colby Horton and his wife, Cheryl, and Amy Whitehead; and her great-grandchildren, Julia, Emma, and Matthew Horton, and Hadley, Ava, and Colin Whitehead.
Though our hearts are heavy, we are deeply grateful for the years we shared with Dorothy, Dot, mom, Mee-Mee. Her legacy is found not only in the family she loved so much, but also in the countless ordinary moments that she made so special.
Those moments will continue to remind us of the remarkable woman she was. She will be missed beyond words, remembered with love, and forever remain in our hearts.
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul... Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me." — Psalm 23:1-4
