Evelyn Mary (Hurtuk) Hendrick grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut with her parents, her sister and two brothers. She loved the ocean, sailing and fishing. In high school she competed in fencing and water skiing. Her best friend, Martha, introduced her to her future husband, Howard Hendrick.
Evelyn and Howard worked in the aerospace industry. They moved with their jobs to Texas when their daughter, Sue, was four years old. Evelyn worked for nine engineers developing the first US space satellite, Explorer I. She retired and spent the next 50 plus years enjoying her life and her family.
Evelyn was a member of the Arlington Saddle Club where she competed in rodeo play days in the events of pole bending, barrel racing, anything with speed. She and Howard also raised cutting horses until she was no longer able to ride. She still enjoyed the water, but with no ocean in north Texas, she chose to compete in fishing tournaments. She also loved to garden and work in the yard. Evelyn declared a lifelong war on dandelions….and laziness. No one could come close to out-working her until she was well into her 70’s. Not to remain idle, she took up cross stitching when she had her cataracts removed. To relax Evelyn enjoyed sitting on her porch swing with a cold beer, or watching a western movie.
Evelyn was survived by her daughter, Sue; two grandchildren, Wayne and LeAnn; and two great-grandchildren, Coley and Karissa.
