On October 1932, a beautiful baby girl was born to the parents of Lawrence Elisha Miles and Cleo Leotha Lee in Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Oliver grew up in the wealthy section of South Dallas and attended Lincoln High School. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.
Her family moved to Irving, Texas in 1949. Mrs. Oliver was a senior at Lincoln High at the time, so she insisted on commuting from Irving to the South Dallas School so she could graduate with her classmates.
In 1992, she retired from the position as a business representative for GTE Later Verizon. She was the first Black person to integrate the company in 1965 as a Directory Assistant Operator. During her lifetime, she also attended the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas where she studied early childcare. She went on to teach kindergarten and Head Start. She was the teacher to a lot of children in Bear Creek. She was a member of the Lovely Swingers line and round dance group, the Lovely Tappers. She was the Secretary/Treasurer of the West Park Recreation Center Advisory Board, a charter member of the West Irving Improvement Association, a member of the Crown Club, and the proud winner of the Ms. Mature Irving Pageant in 1999.
Not long after she graduated from high school at the age of 19, she married Lee Oliver and to this union was born three children: one daughter, Patrice Oliver Foster, and two sons, Darren Paul Oliver and James Dionne Oliver. On Monday, April 4, 2022, Gloria, in her 89th season, transitioned from life on Earth to everlasting life in Heaven.
Mrs. Oliver was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Cleo Miles; her brothers, Ruben Arville Miles and Don Edgar Miles; her sisters, Gwendolyn Elizabeth Moore and Carolyn Joyce Miles; her husband, James Lee Oliver; and her grandson, Jamie Oliver. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving and dedicated family: daughter, Patrice Oliver Foster; son, Darren Paul Oliver; son, James Dionne Oilver and wife, DeLisa; two brothers: Shelby Miles and Lawrence Adolphus Miles; and her grandchildren: Adrian Collins Sr. (Adrian Jr., Dean, and wife Lena), LaShanda Markham (Amberly, Dejon, Quailynn, Bralynn, Ashton), Kristen Castillo Sanchez (Allyssa, Allysia), Aria Brock (Jayden, Aubrey, Berkly) (Donte), Charles Walker Jr. (Charles II), Teniqua Walker (Elijah, C.J., Akayla), Darren Quincy Oliver (Saniah, Josiah, Tatum), Kimberly Waker (Kobe, Kaleb, Kinsley), and Jamie Oliver (deceased).
A visitation for Mrs. Oliver will be held on Friday, April 15, 2022 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home in Arlington, Texas. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the South Chapel of Moore Funeral Home in Arlington, Texas. Burial will immediately follow in Moore Memorial Gardens.
