Harlan was born on October 20, 1937 to Herman and Clara (Madsen) Frey in Watertown, SD. He was the 4th of 12 children.
After Harlan graduated from Redfield High School, he joined the US Navy. After almost 4 years in the US Navy he was working on a road construction crew in and around Wall, SD, where he met his wife, Linda (Schmid) Frey and they married on April 8, 1961. They went on to have 3 children: Danny Frey, Terry Frey and Pam (Frey) Bendorf.
Harlan worked for more than 50 years in the pharmacy design profession beginning his career with Foremost McKesson and later ventured off to start his own design firm, Harlan Frey and Associates.
He loved fishing and hunting, but his greatest joy in life was his family. Every summer vacation was spent visiting family in South Dakota. His latest visit was this past Aug. He enjoyed seeing his siblings in Minnesota and South Dakota. He was very happy to have had that time to reminisce and be reminded of what's important in life, time spent with the ones you love.
He was a proud father and his children knew there was "always love in daddy's hands." When his grandchildren were young the family gathered at their house for any and every occasion and sometimes for 'no reason at all.' Each of his grandchildren were carried around the house as he pointed at every picture and 'thing' and he would tell them what or who it was all about. Equal time was given to the grandbabies as they sat on grandpa's 'shelf' and he would sing to them and make them laugh. This love carried over to his great grandchildren and even in his final days they would always bring a huge smile to his face.
Harlan was predeceased by his parents (Hermand and Clara Frey), several siblings: Don Frey, Mel Frey, Bill Frey, Kathi Frey, Marilyn Frey and Anita (Frey) Baum.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Linda Frey, Children: Danny Frey of Angel Fire, NM; Terry (Jerri) Frey of Rowlett, TX; Pam Bendorf of Arlington, TX, and his 'adopted' daughter, Annette (Glenn) Escott of Arlington, TX His grandchildren: Nicholas (Emily) Bendorf, Chad Bendorf, Michael Frey, Christina Frey, Justin Frey (Michaela), Toni (Alexi) Frey, Katy Escott and Grace Escott.
