Herbert John McCauley, 82, of Bedford, Texas slipped from his earthly bonds to be with our Lord on Friday, March 16, 2018 following a brief illness. Herb was born on November 15, 1935 in Augusta, Ohio. He was the only son of Edward and Bessie McCauley. He attended high school in Minerva, Ohio and that’s where he met the love of his life, Billie Jo Nolen, whom he married in 1954.
After graduating from high school, Herb joined the Navy. He proudly served our country for 22 years, and was appointed the highest rating as Force Master Chief Petty Officer of the Naval Air Reserve Force/Naval Air Reserve Command. He provided regular input to the Chief of Naval Operations regarding the readiness, morale and welfare of personnel within the command of 109 Naval Air Stations and Squadrons. During his time in the Navy, Herb, Billie and their daughter Cindy lived in Ohio, Virginia, Michigan, Illinois, and Texas. They made many life-long friends at each post and continued to visit with these friends throughout their many years of traveling.
After retiring from the Navy in 1974, the family moved to Arlington, Texas. This is where Herb began his second career in commercial real estate management and leasing. Herb was widely recognized for successfully managing and leasing Six Flags Mall, Red Bird Mall and Richardson Square Mall. He also served as a Board Member of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and was Chairman of the Ambassadors. His leadership was important to the Board of Dallas Red Bird Bank, serving on the Executive Loan Committee. Herb gladly participated in Rotary for 30 years, serving as President of Red Bird Rotary Club International, and was awarded the Rotarian of the Year award and the Paul Harris Fellow award. In 1982, his career took him to Dallas where he managed a large business park. He was selected to be the Chairman of Economic Development for the Stemmons Corridor Business Association, served on the Board of the Harry Hines Beautification Committee, and was awarded the “Best Real Estate Deal” of the year in Dallas in 1994.
Upon retirement from commercial real estate Herb served on the board of the Lake Interlochen Homeowners Association, performing the responsibilities as Chairman of the Architectural Control Committee. He also joined the Arlington Men’s Golf Association and served as President. He spent many hours perfecting his game with the great friends he made with this group. Herb and Billie also attended the First Christian Church of Arlington.
Herb’s personality was viewed by all who were blessed to know his as “larger than life”. He was a true friend and devoted family man. He adored his daughter Cindy, the mother of their three grandsons. Herb and Billie made it a priority to be regulars at the sporting events, encouraging Brian, Brad and Blake, and also their teammates, where many became “adopted grandsons” to the McCauley family. Herb took particular delight in planning great adventures, and they visited many exciting places around the world. In particular, Herb loved the beach, the lake and anything around the water. All he required was a snorkel mask and fins and he could spend the whole day in the water.
Recently Herb and Billie moved to Parc Place Retirement Community in Bedford. True to form, Herb made fast friends and developed many wonderful relationships. Even during his brief time at the rehab hospital he touched the lives of the staff there. We will hang on to our fond memories of Herb McCauley and they will never fade, because he was the finest of men.
Herb leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Billie, daughter Cindy Knotts of Bedford, grandchildren Brian Knotts of Boulder, Colorado, Brad Knotts and his wife Taylor of Dallas, and Blake Knotts of Bedford.
“Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming Wow - What a Ride!” Wow, Herb, you sure had a good ride!
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be forwarded to the Herb McCauley Memorial, either with the:
