Herbert Allen Rektorik passed away in his home under Hospice care surrounded by love and family on December 28, 2022 at the age of 98. He was born to Jaro and Agnes Rektorik on January 8, 1924 and grew up on a farm in Robstown Texas until he was drafted during WWII. He served as a Co-Pilot in the Army-Air Force, First Lieutenant, flying B-29s. He was very proud to serve and loved to reminisce and share his experiences in his golden years.
While stationed in Moorhead, MN, in 1943, he met the love of his life, Alice Marie Romslo who was a student of Concordia College at the time. He knew immediately that she was “the one”. Although she was initially coy, he managed to win her heart by continuing to exchange love letters for the duration of the war. After marriage in 1946, they moved to Kingsville Texas where Herbert graduated college at Texas A&I (A&M) and started a family.
He made his career as an Accountant for Coastal States Gas Company in Corpus Christi. While working with Coastal States, he also maintained a small acreage of farmland in Robstown which became the location of their home in 1958.
Herbert was very active in the local community, church, and American Legion. He also prepared tax returns for local farmers. He so enjoyed dancing waltzes and polkas with Alice at the weekend Community Hall dances.
He and Alice relocated in 1974 to Spring Texas where he continued to work for Coastal States until his retirement in 1988. While in Spring, he loved to play golf and maintain a beautiful yard – lush with flowers.
They moved to Arlington Texas in 1993 to be closer to their grown children. There, he was able to continue his love of golf as a member of the Arlington Senior Men’s Golf Association and joined a couples’ bridge group. They joined the Advent Lutheran Church and remained members throughout their remaining years.
Always a disciplined and dedicated worker, he also found the importance of play and maintaining a sense of humor. Family and faith were always his priorities.
He was preceded in death of his parents and siblings Archie Rektorik (Alice) and Peggy Knesek (Johnny).
After 66 years of marriage, Alice preceded his death in 2012. Herbert is survived by 3 daughters: Carol Mundle, Marianne Hess (Michael) and Lee Ann Quigley (John Knox); 3 Grandchildren: Greg Hinze (Patty), Chris Plummer (Kira) and Amy Hinze (Tim Whitefield); and 1 great grandchild: Grant Plummer.
The family sincerely thanks the Staff of Concho Hearts Hospice for the kindness and gentle care they extended to Herbert and the family during his final days.
Visitation will be held on January 16th from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the Moore Funeral Home at 1219 N. Davis Drive, Arlington, TX. Memorial Services will be held for Herbert at Advent Lutheran Church, 3232 S. Cooper St. Arlington Texas 76015 on January 17th at 10:00 AM.
