

Jan was born August 13th in Arpaho, Nebraska and moved to Ft. Worth as a very small child. She continued to live in the Ft. Worth area for the remainder of her life. Her professional education included a degree in Public Health from The University of Colorado at Boulder; Bachelor and Master Degrees from Texas Wesleyan University; a degree in Public Health Administration from Texas Christian University, and a Doctorate from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas.
Dr. Jan Herron Walter was a retired administrator in the Fort Worth Independent School District. She was the Director of Health Services for the school district for most of her professional life. Her foremost efforts were directed toward improving the health of children in Fort Worth public schools. She developed a program for school nurse practitioners in coordination with The University of Texas at Arlington. She was a pioneer in advancing the function of professional nurses. She was very proud of school nurses and maintained a close relationship with them throughout her days.
Jan served as an officer on many professional organizations including local and state nurses associations. She served on the advisory board of the UTA School of Nursing, TCU and TCJC Schools of Nurse, as well as on the State Board Committee for Nurse Licensure. Jan was listed in Who’s Who of American Women in Education. Dr. Walter was very active in the American Red Cross throughout her life. She published several articles in professional magazines and was the recipient of many awards throughout her professional career.
Jan enjoyed her family, friends, church, bridge, theater, travel and reading. She enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. She is survived by her granddaughters Tina Bowles of Kerrville, Texas, and Lindsey Kielman (husband, Ryan) of Missouri City, Texas; great grandchildren Krystle Pfeiffer, Hadley Kielman, and Cooper Kielman; daughters Joan Herron of Amarillo, Texas, Sandy Hutson of Amarillo, Texas, Janet Herron of Orlando, Florida, Cheryl Bowles Sieker of Kerrville, Texas; nieces Jan Fuchs, Pam Coffield, Phyllis Hahn, and nephew John Swindells.
A service was held for family on May 12th at Moore Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Jan’s name can be made to The American Red Cross.
