Jim was raised in Midland, Texas, and attended Midland High School, graduating in 1960. He married Patricia Ann McDonald in 1972, and together they raised two children.
Jim devoted more than 35 years of steady, honorable work as a Locomotive Engineer with Rock Island, Katy, and the Union Pacific—years marked by reliability, quiet competence, and a deep sense of responsibility. In his spare time, he found peace outdoors, enjoying hunting and fishing well into his later years.
A faithful member of Turnpike/CrossPoint Church of Christ in Grand Prairie, Jim served as an usher and participated in the Food Pantry program for many years, offering his time with humility and care for others. His greatest joy was family get-togethers, where his gentle spirit, kindness, and love were felt by all. He adored his wife and cared for and protected her until his final days, a devotion that never wavered.
Jim will also be remembered for his generosity—especially by his grandchildren, who looked forward each year to his gift of special coins, a tradition that grew into a meaningful collection over time. Those who knew him will recall his calm presence through life’s hardships, his habit of placing others’ needs before his own, and his quick, witty responses that brought lightness to everyday moments.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lacy and Marie Pack; his brother, Melvin Pack; and his sister, Octavia Pack Stevens.
Jim is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Pack; his son, Michael Allen Steele and wife Tammy Lee Steele of Waxahachie TX; daughter in law Pam Melville Steele of Abilene TX; Grandson William Bradley Steele and wife Becca Steele of Abilene, TX; Grandson Matthew Evan Steele and wife Jillian Steele of Abilene, TX; Megan Steele Rizos and husband Stratis Rizos of Lewisville, TX; grandson Nicholas Evan Steele and wife Caitie Steele of Ft.
