John was a very good friend and from such a good family. We were fortunate enough to celebrate his 70th birthday with him and his family We sent wish lanterns up up and got a few funny stories from John. No doubt you will be missed John.

John had many fine qualities, but one of the things I remember most was that he really, really loved Ellen. Theirs was a true marriage wherein both were better for having married each other--all too rare now. As part of his love for Ellen, John became a treasured part of the Metzler family, which involves a lot of people! John didn't flinch, and dove right in; how I admired him for that!

John, you will be missed. I wish I had gotten to know you even better. You were always so good at taking care of my baby girl when I was out of town. I felt so much better knowing she was in your lap when I had to drive away. You always had a sweet smile and a hug for me. Ellen, please know you will continue to be in my prayers as you adjust to this new life. I love you...

We first met John at Great Southwest Golf Club in Grand Prairie, TX. He enjoyed playing gin with the guys and had his moments when he won and when he lost and was frustrated, you could always count on John saying something funny. When he became sick, someone would drop him off at GSW to fellowship and watch the guys play gin. John and Glynn used to talk about his sickness and although sometimes he felt down, he was a standup guy the way he carried himself.

John was one of the most well-read people I've known, and it was always a joy to chat with him.  He could talk about just about any subject.  I will miss John and his sharp wits and good sense of humor.

John was a very good friend who always knew the best places for good food and margaritas.  It was always a pleasure to ‘hang out' with him as we shared a love for reading, long conversations on a broad range of topics, and many hilarious jokes.  I learned a lot from John and will always be grateful that he was my friend. He will forever be missed by all who knew and loved him.

I liked John,and John liked me, I know because he told me he did, and if he didn't he would have told me that too.

John was a winner with a winners attitude, whether in sales, cards, or discussions (because John was so  passionate, some might have called them arguments).
  
I first met John in 1989 when he was the National Sales Manager at Encyclopaedia Britannica, and I was just starting out.  John was a Boss, Mentor, and friend and I could always count on him to have my back, which he did more than once.  Even with the changes and ups and downs we both endured at EB, we remained friends who would send each other bad jokes via email, talk on the phone from time to time, and John even set up and guided a great fishing trip to Lake Fork for my buddy Mike Warfield and myself when he wasn't feeling great.  We had some fun, shared some memories, and caught some fish (no lie see picture).  

I will always remember John as a sharp dresser with a wit to match, and a great story teller.  I can't tell you how many hooks, lines, and sinkers I swallowed before I even knew I was suckered in.  Most of all I will remember him as an all around nice guy who was always checking to be sure everyone else was having a good time!  

Hombre, I hope that we can meet again in another time and in another place.

I was blessed to come to know John Franks when he married my sister, Ellen. John had a truly inquiring mind and was the embodiment of a "renaissance" man. There was very little John did not read about and remember. He was a delight to converse with and is greatly missed.

My heart goes out to all of John's family. We had not seen one another in way too long (lived far apart and busy with young family members), but when we were kids we had fun times together and loved when our parents visited. God bless you with His peace, Ellen, and all the family. With love to you all.

John became a part of our family 21 years ago and I am so glad I knew him. His extensive knowledge in almost everything amazed me. If he didn't know something he surely knew someone who did.  I have wonderful memories of the trip we took to Lake Murray, Phil and I were fairly new boat owners at that time and John shared so much of his knowledge with us about boating, fishing and even cleaning the fish we caught. That was a great weekend that we still talk about after all these years.  I will miss John's sense of humor and his ability his provide answers to even the most obscure questions.  Rest in peace John.

Miss you sooo much ... our conversations about many things even though you are very opinionated , but that made you who you were. Your quick wit was hard to one up ... not to mention your stories. I love and miss you . Your little Sis

I met John when he interviewed me for a job with EB. At that time my Dad was into motorcycles and John was as well. We hit it off immediately and he took me to lunch. I was hired and worked with John for several years with EB. Years later we both worked together again at ASCD. John became a good friend over the years and I have to say, I have never met anyone like him. He would argue with you one moment and the next we were out having a beer. Yes, belive it or not, John had a temper:) He also had a great sense of humor. I learned much from John. How to do things and also how not to do things:) I consider John one of my best friends and am proud to have known him.

John was very special to me. I felt that, because we were both in sales, he could relate to the challenges I faced. Anytime I had an issue Ellen would take it home to John and he would give me honest and helpful input. I respected his opinions...he was always right!
There will always be a special place in my heart for John and I know I am among many who will miss his presence in our lives.

We met John at a G.T.E. party back in the 70's. We hit it off immediately when we discovered we both loved to fish. Through the years we spent many a day traveling all over Texas dragging a boat and some great conversations .When John lived in San Diego he called and said he had booked us a trip to go out fishing for 
albacore tuna. Charlene & I flew out and the trip was terrific. John was always a very good host. We also made two trips to S. Padre Island. All of our trips were a blast. I stopped drinking 29 years ago  and whenever we were out he would ask me if it would be ok if he had a beer when we stopped to eat. He really respected my dedication to sobriety. I always told him, John go ahead it does not bother me at all. John was an charmer and was very astute. The last couple of years we have drifted apart but I think of of him often and all of the good times. He was the best friend I've ever had.
I will miss him dearly. GOD bless his soul !
