John was a World War II veteran and served with a tank destroyer battalion as well as working for the VA Hospital for 30 years. After retirement, John played the character "Box Car Billy" in the Arlington 4th of July parade for 20 years.
Survivors: Wife, Jackie; sons, Jack McGrath of Dallas and James McGrath of Roanoke; daughters, Debbie Crawford and husband, Jim, of Arlington and Sharon Peterson of Arlington; sister, Lorraine Power of Dorchester, Mass.; grandchildren, Cheryl Evans, Jason McGrath, Audrey Peterson, Sara Peterson and Tanner Peterson; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
