When I came to work for Dr. Porter in 1973, he was in the midst of moving his laboratories from the Department of Physiology at UT Southwestern to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology where he had been appointed the Scientific Director of the Center for Reproductive Biology Sciences. (Now the Cecil H. and Ida Green Center for Reproductive Biology Sciences.) The lab was bustling with young, energetic post-docs from all over the world who came to Dallas to train in neuroendocrinology -- the study of how the nervous system and endocrine system interacted. Over his 50-year career, his contributions were many but none more lasting the influence he had on the young men and women whom he trained. After Dr. Porter retired in 2003, he was named Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology -- the third person to receive that honor and the first Ph.D. Among my fondest memories is one of Dr. Porter in his sock feet, standing on the counter, cleaning the top of laboratory hood because he didn't think that Nollie Mae Henry should be climbing up there. That's the kind of man he was. Dr. Porter, you were one of a kind! Rest in peace. To all of Dr. Porter's family, let me say -- I know how hard it is to lose someone you love. My deepest sympathies to all of you.
