John Alen Shafer

John Alen Shafer, 80, Arlington, TX formerly of Northampton, PA, died Monday, April 5, 2021 at Community Healthcare of Texas, 1111 Summit Avenue, after a brief stay at Medical City Hospital, Fort Worth, TX. He is the husband of Suzan Stanley Shafer, formerly of Cooper, TX. They met during college and married in 1965 at the Centenary Methodist Church, Saint Louis, Mo.

John served the country during the Vietnam-era conflict, as a Phlebotomy technician for the Fifth Army Medical Laboratories in Saint Louis, MO. He received the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Expert M-14 Badge.

He was most proud of his family Michael Patrick Shafer, Raymondville, TX, John James Shafer, wife, Kelly (Stewart), Arlington, TX, Heather Elizabeth, husband, Paul Avila, Fort Worth, Matthew Wayne Shafer, Arlington, and James Michael Shafer, Richardson, and nine grandchildren Lilly Shafer, Blake Shafer, Connor Avila, Caiden Shafer, Megan and Caitlan Avila, Henry Shafer, David Shafer, and Katherine Shafer. Born in Bisbee, AZ, he was the son of Michael Shafer and Alene (Rodgers) of Northampton, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents and only brother, Dr. James Shafer, Lindenwold, NJ. John studied History, Government, Geology, and Chemistry at East Stroudsburg State College, Easton, PA and continued his studies at East Texas State University, Commerce, TX, before joining the army in 1965. After the service, he worked in the research laboratories for Pfizer Chemical Company, Easton, and Pfizer’s pharmaceutical sales for the northeastern states. In 1980, the family returned to Texas, where he worked in the building supplies and construction industry.

A memorial service will be held at 10 am, April 15, 2021 at the Moore Funeral Home, 1219 North Davis Drive, Arlington, TX 76012 (817-275-2711) followed by a reception at John’s home. A military burial services will take place, (date and time to be announced), at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 78211 (214-467-3374). Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, tunnel2towers.org/smart-home-program/about-shp/, in honor of our most catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.
