Judy was born to Alexander Kovacs and Emma Mae Tull Kovacs on 11/8/1936 in Merced, California. Her father worked as a rancher and her mother was a housewife. Judy and her younger sister Suzie enjoyed playing in the California sun.
When Judy was in middle school, the family moved to San Antonio, Texas where Judy’s father worked as a produce inspector for the US Army. Later, the family moved to Fort Worth, where Alex continued his job inspecting fruits and vegetables for the Army while Emma worked as a secretary at Bell Helicopter. Judy graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1954. She met her husband Matt Jerome Bauer, and they married in 1955.
Judy and Jerry moved to Austin for Jerry to work on his degree at UT Austin, and Judy worked as a telephone operator. When they learned they were expecting their first child, they moved back to Fort Worth to be closer to their families. Ultimately, they purchased their first home in Arlington and Jerry went to work for IBM in Dallas. Judy stayed home to raise their son and daughter, Kurt and Kristine.
Once the kids were in school, in 1969, Judy decided to attend nursing school, and went through the LVN training program offered at Arlington Memorial Hospital. She graduated and took a job at AMH and worked there for several years. In 1975, she was hired to be a nurse with Arlington Women’s Clinic and worked there for almost 25 years! She had a passion for medicine and enjoyed working for Dr. Ken Talkington, caring for patients and assisting in surgery.
Outside of work, Judy enjoyed traveling with Jerry, which often involved visiting someplace exciting for an auto race. In 1984, they were able to attend several races in Europe including the Grand Prix of Monaco. After Jerry’s untimely death in 1995, Judy kept herself busy with work at the clinic, crafting, quilting, and taking care of her many beloved pets. She became more involved at New World United Methodist Church, where she was a charter member, and participated with her Sunday School classmates in many fun activities. She volunteered for mission trips including a medical mission trip to Venezuela.
Despite all this adventure, Judy’s greatest love was being Grandmommy to her four grandchildren, Emma and Shane Bauer and Rachel and Hayley Courtney. Although Emma and Shane lived far away, she loved every chance she got to visit with them. She was able to spend a lot of time with Rachel and Hayley in Dallas and was able to be their afterschool pick up twice a week after she retired. The most special event of all was the birth of Judy’s great grandson, Ozro earlier this year.
Judy is survived by her sister Suzanne Hill, son Kurt Bauer and wife Deborah, daughter Kristine Courtney and husband Paul, granddaughter Emma Bauer, grandson Shane Bauer, granddaughter Rachel Davis and husband Oz, granddaughter Hayley Courtney, and great grandson Ozro Davis.
A graveside service for Judith will be held Sunday, September 4, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Moore Memorial Gardens, 1219 North Davis Drive, Arlington, TX 76012.
