Karen graduated from Sam Houston High School and attended The University of Texas at Arlington where she studied Accounting. She went on to work for Kimbell Foods, Winn-Dixie, and was most proud of her 22 years of tenure at the Fort Worth Public Library, where she first retired in 2013. Karen believed deeply in public service and continued to serve the Fort Worth Public Library on a variety of projects as a consultant for the next 5 years, eventually fully retiring in 2018.
Karen believed in giving as much of herself and her talents as she could and contributed her time and expertise as the President of the City of Fort Worth’s Coalition of Retired Employees where she oversaw the important mission of protecting and improving the pension and health care benefits for retired City employees.
Karen also volunteered year after year for the United Way VITA Program for free tax preparation, giving long days during tax season to help those who were unable to afford quality services.
Karen fully enjoyed her retirement, especially travel, late nights with a good book, and time with friends and family.
She was survived by her husband John Kelz, her daughter Lisa Kelz and husband Lane Rackets and grandson Kyle Rackets, her daughter Elizabeth Kelz and partner Andre Bernard, and her brother Peter VanLeuvan and wife Marilyn VanLeuvan.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Moore Funeral Home in Arlington, Texas on June 29th at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers donations can be made directly to https://www.unitedwaytarrant.org/donate/ in honor of Karen’s life and love of service to others.
