Leroy “Lee” Howard Abercrombie, 74, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2019, in Arlington, TX surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born on February 7, 1945, to Howard and Alma Abercrombie, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and graduated from Nathan Hale High School in 1963. He was active in the Civil Air Patrol and was active in student government.
Lee attended several universities including Oklahoma State University where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Central State University in Edmund, Oklahoma in 1967. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and was commissioned an Ensign in 1968 in Pensacola, Florida. He served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Oriskany during the Vietnam War and returned home and left the active duty navy. He later served as an officer in the United States Naval Reserve in the fighter squadron VF-201 in Grand Prairie, Texas. He achieved the rank of Captain in 1990 and retired in 1992 from the Naval Reserve.
Additionally, Lee worked for the Dallas Fire Department as a Senior Arson Investigator for over 20 years where he served in arson investigation, fire inspection and polygraph examination. He attended the police academy, the fire academy, the polygraph school at Texas A&M University and was a licensed peace officer. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington and did his graduate work in the area of criminal justice.
He enjoyed reading, stamp collecting, genealogy, sports, airplanes and collecting vintage beer steins.
He was active in the Arlington Masonic Lodge No. 438 including serving as a Master of the Lodge. He was active in both the York Rite and was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite. He was also active in the Eastern Star and the Shrine during his lifetime.
He served and was a past president of the Pantego Lion’s Club.
He was a Cub Scout Den Leader and he served as an Usher at St. Peter and St. Paul Anglican Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 31.5 years, Donna Abercrombie; daughter Wendi Abercrombie Vinson, her husband Chris Vinson; son Bryan Abercrombie, his wife Christy Abercrombie; sister Gail Hankins and her husband Tom Hankins; brother in law, John "Johnny' Doherty; aunt June Howard and her daughter Susan Bell and her husband David Bell and their daughter Natasha.
He is survived by his grandchildren Morgan Pitt, Landon Abercrombie and Quinn Abercrombie, and special children Canyon Blacklock, Kayla Blacklock and Madalyn Lujan;
He is also survived by his beloved cats Sammy and Tinker.
Visitation will be held at Moore Funeral Home, 1219 N Davis Dr., Arlington, TX 76012, on Monday, July 1st, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at St. Peter & St. Paul Church, 4000 Morris Ln, Arlington, TX 76016 at 9:30 a.m. on July 2nd. Committal will follow at DFW National Cemetery at 11:30 a.m.
