Lynda was born October 9, 1939, in Waco, Texas, to Charles Joseph and Margaret Louise (Miller) Peterson. She grew up in Waco enjoying a special relationship with her four cousins Terri, Claire, Susan and Pam Peterson. She graduated from Waco High School in 1957, after which she attended North Texas State University, now known as the University of North Texas. In 1959, she married Robert W. Freeman (Bob), and to this marriage three children were born; Robert W. Freeman, Jr. (Rob), Joseph Brent Freeman (Joe), and Leslie Ann Freeman. A few years after their marriage, she moved to Arlington, Texas, where Bob had taken a position as General Manager of Six Flags Over Texas.
Lynda’s faith was important to her, and she was active in various Catholic churches in the community. Lynda and Bob were divorced and Lynda took a position as Assistant to the Mayor of Arlington, serving as the assistant to mayors Harold Patterson, Richard Greene, and Elzie Odom, and becoming known as “Lynda in the Mayor’s Office.” She not only wrote many of their speeches but also occasionally stood in their place at functions they could not attend.
In 1991, Lynda married Fred C. Weekley and this marriage lasted until her death. The couple became active in each other’s churches, Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and St. Mark’s Anglican Church. As a result of this marriage, she became a beloved stepmother to Fred’s two daughters, Amber Carothers and Caroline Karazissis, and Lynda and Fred treated their respective stepchildren as their own.
During the last years of her employment with the City of Arlington, Lynda took a new position as a liaison with various charitable organizations and was instrumental in the establishment of the Sister City relationship between Arlington and its sister city, Bad Koenigshofen, Germany.
Lynda retired in 2007 to assist in caring for her mother. She was a faithful daughter as well as a loving wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by her husband Fred, her son Rob (Kristen), Rob’s first wife Margaret Wamsley (Bob), stepdaughters Amber Carothers (Scott) and Caroline Karazissis (Kris), grandsons Matt Freeman (Cherelle) and Danny Freeman (Mersadi), great grandchildren (Mila and Elwyn), and step-grandchildren, Anna Carothers Dunbar (Michael), and Connor Karazissis. She was predeceased by her children Joe and Leslie.
Lynda was beautiful, both inside and out. She had an outgoing personality, having been honored as “Most Representative Girl” and cheerleader as a senior at Waco High School, while achieving academically. She made friends throughout her life and was respected by all who knew her. Her work with the City of Arlington resulted in her being named a “Community Star” by the Star Telegram and by a special tribute to her by her former boss Richard Greene. To say she will be missed by everyone who knew her is an understatement.
