Mike passed away unexpectedly on July 10, 2025. Born on May 10, 1952, in Hale Center, Texas, Mike was the middle of three brothers born to Leslie and Patty Jean Harper. Around the age of four, his family moved to Arlington, Texas, where he spent his childhood making cherished memories running the neighborhood with his brothers, cousins, and friends who remained close to his heart throughout his life.
A proud member of the Arlington High School Colts Class of 1970, Mike played football with passion and went on to play at Tyler Junior College and the University of Texas at Arlington. He loved reminiscing about his football days and sharing those stories with family and friends.
Mike enjoyed fishing, camping, and playing guitar alongside his sons. Known to many as “Coach Mike,” he took great joy in coaching his children and grandchildren in various sports, always showing up with encouragement. He also loved eating ice cream sandwiches with his grandsons, and could always be depended on for a colorful joke.
Above all, Mike loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Gaye; his sons, Chris and wife Stephanie, Jackson and wife Brianna; his daughter Dara and husband Jon. He is also survived by his brother Dave and wife Vicky, and their sons Kyle and Austin, his sister-in-law Yvonne Pedersen, along with her sons Kelly and wife Tasha Harper, and Jason Harper.
Mike was lovingly known as “Pop” to his greatest joys—his three grandsons and best buddies: Jack, Gus, and Beau Phillips.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Patty Jean Harper; his brother, Leslie “Butch” Harper; his grandfather Al Bailey; and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Mike’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and the deep bonds of family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. He also loved an “Open Mic Night” so if anyone would like to share a story or memory, please do.
A special thank you to Mike’s cardiologist Dr. Steven Vignale who treated Mike for over 26 years.
As Mike would say, “Glad y’all got to see me again.” We’ll miss you always.
The Harper Family would be honored to have donations made to the American Heart Association in Mike's name.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Moore Funeral Home on July 19, 2025, at 2pm; 1219 N. Davis Dr Arlington, TX 76012. In honor of Mike the family asks you wear a black shirt t-shirt and blue jeans.
Following the service, the family will gather at J. Gilligan’s and would be honored if you would join them to share memories and stories about Mike.
