Prem Prasad Mahendroo

Prem Prasad Mahendroo, age 96, passed away on August 13, 2026 in Fort Worth, TX. He was born on July 4, 1930 in Indore, India to Shri Raghu Nath Prasad Mahendroo and Satgur Piyari Mahendroo. Prem was raised in Haridwar, India and attended The University of Texas in Austin where he received his PhD in Physics in 1960.

He married Indu Surat Malhotra in 1962 and the couple had two children, Mala and Sanjay.

Prem was a Professor at Texas Christian University for 20 years and Senior Director of Research Medical Instrumentation at Alcon Laboratories for 17 years until he retired in 1997.

In his spare time Prem enjoyed photography, gardening, reading, and buying/using the newest technology gadgets. He believed in the Radhasoami faith and enjoyed his time at satsang. His family and friends will always remember him as a warm and loving family man who could be counted on in times of need.

He is preceded in death by his mother Satgur Piyari Mahendroo and father Raghu Nath Prasad Mahendroo and elder brother Desh Bandu Mahendroo.

He is survived by his wife Indu Mahendroo, daughter Mala Mahendroo Rangadass, son Sanjay Mahendroo, daughter-in-law Soma Mahendroo, and grandchildren Karan Mahendroo, Priyanka Rangadass, Katya Rangadass, Ishaan Mahendroo, Shonali Mahendroo and Rohan Mahendroo. He is also survived by his siblings, Kanchan, Shabad and Pushpa.

Prem Mahendroo came to the US in 1956 as a Fulbright scholar. He pursued a Ph.D. in physics using the newly developed nuclear magnetic to conduct research on temperature-dependent relaxation properties of crystalline solids. As a professor at Texas Christian University from 1960-1980, he helped establish a new Ph.D. program in physics, developed an externally funded research program and was a devoted educator. He subsequently moved to Alcon Laboratories, a global leader in eye care. Prem stayed with Alcon until 1997 and during that time set up an MRI lab for eye research. Later, as an adjunct professor at UT Southwestern, he helped mentor other researchers developing noninvasive techniques to diagnose glaucoma. In 2017, Prem Mahendroo established the Dr. Wilson Nolle and Sri Raghunath Mahendroo Professorship in Neuroscience to support faculty and discovery science in the Dept of Neuroscience at the University of Texas in Austin, TX.

He leaves behind an enduring legacy based on his professional accomplishments and the huge positive impact he made in the lives of his nuclear and extended family and a large wonderful army of friends.
