Ramona Kathryn Wheeler

She passed peacefully from this life on September 17, 2022, at her home in Arlington, Texas, at 93 years of age. The youngest in a family of seven, “Romie” as she was called by family and friends, enjoyed a childhood surrounded by nature and the rotation of the seasons on the farm.

At the age of 16, she went to college, first to Abilene Christian College for two years, and then transferring to the University of Texas in Austin. A pioneer in her time, Ramona was one of the first women in the state of Texas to become a licensed pharmacist. Her career serving the community in that professional capacity spanned 40 years.

In 1950, Ramona married fellow pharmacy student Bill Roberts. Shortly after the birth of their daughter, he died tragically in the polio epidemic of 1952. She credited her faith in God and the support of her family for helping her through that terrible loss.

In 1969, she married George Wheeler. They were married for 29 years, until his death in 1998.

Ramona was a member of the Hillcrest Church of Christ in Arlington since 1957. She was known for her inspiring cards and letters to her church family and her entire extended family. With her husband George, she devoted many hours to Hearts and Hands, a local charity providing groceries and clothing to those in need. She also worked with Friendspeak, helping foreign students learn English through Bible study. Many of her students kept in touch for years after returning home.

She was preceded in death by parents, Robert Harper Wicker and Vera Lam Wicker; brothers, Wayne, Carl, Foy and Robert Wicker; sisters, Wanda Morgan and Margaret Roberts, and stepdaughter, Cindy Jordan.

She is survived by daughter, Vicki Allison and husband Jim; grandchildren, John Spiars and wife Shanna, Amanda Zouguaghi and husband Mustapha, and Sarah Allison; and eight great-grandchildren, Vladimir and Armand Snell, Carlos, Larissa, Jenna and Matthew Spiars, and Adam and Jibreal Zouguaghi. As well as dozens of nieces and nephews who loved their “Auntie Romie.”

A visitation for Ramona will be held Sunday, September 25, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Moore Funeral Home, 1219 N. Davis Dr, Arlington, Texas 76012. A funeral service will occur Monday, September 26, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Hillcrest Church of Christ, 1401 Hillcrest, Arlington, Texas 76010. A committal service will occur Monday, September 26, 2022 at 12:30 PM at Moore Memorial Gardens, 1219 North Davis Drive, Arlington, TX 76012.
