

Today we remember the life of Ricardo (Richard) Cortez Sr, a man who embraced hard work and family values. He peacefully passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at the age of 85.
Richard was a resident of Grand Prairie Texas for 56 years. He was born on December 5, 1938 in Rio Grande City, Texas. He was the son of Reynaldo Cortez and Maria de la Luz Olivarez.
Richard married his high school sweetheart Elmidia Lydia Lopez in 1958 and they celebrated 66 years of marriage. The couple had 6 children.
Richard was a man of many trades – mainly carpentry. He taught his sons this skill and encouraged them to keep learning other skills. In his early years he was very athletic with running track and playing football in high school along with being a member of the FFA. He also worked in the family tortilla business when not participating in sports.
Richard had a passion for being outside watering his plants, barbequing and enjoying ice cream. He was a passionate sports fan of the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys. He found great joy in having all the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren together for all occasions.
Richard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend whose spirit touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Family and friends will always remember him for his infectious smile, unwavering kindness, support and the love he so freely shared.
He is preceded in death by his parents and younger brother Rene Roberto (Tiny) Cortez.
Survivors include his devoted wife, daughter Cynthia and husband Dan Lievrouw, son Ricardo Cortez Jr., son Rolando Cortez, daughter Celinda and husband David Christian, daughter Mimi and husband Tim Conway, son Roger and wife Tina Cortez. Grandchildren are Ricardo D. Chavez, Ryan Christian, Courtney Christian, RJ Cortez, Jessi Cortez, Jarrid Fraley, Caleigh Christian Baisden, Justin Fraley, Jazmin Cortez, Rachel Cortez, Madison Lievrouw and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, three sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.
