Ruth attended Delta State University in Cleveland, MS where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. At DSU she played basketball and was involved in many student activities including Baptist Student Union and The Women’s Honor Council. She continued her education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Religious Education. After completing her education, she taught kindergarten and was a Director of Children’s Ministry. Later, she became Outreach Secretary at First Baptist Church in Arlington, where she welcomed and nurtured new friends.
Ruth met her husband, Glenn, in Fort Worth, and they enjoyed life together for 55 years. After rearing their family in Arlington they cherished their retirement years at Lake Lydia in Quitman, TX. Glenn passed away in 2014.
Ruth was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, reading, and playing bridge. She found great joy in meeting new people and engaging in meaningful conversation, always loving to hear other’s opinions. God also blessed her with a beautiful voice. She loved singing, even in her last days, the great old hymns she grew up with:
‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
Just to know, “Thus saith the Lord!”
She delighted in the time spent with her children and grandchildren, sharing stories and laughing. She is survived by their children, J. Eddie, Linda (John) Vandercook, and David (Linda); and her grandchildren, Grayce, Maggie, Henry, Emma, Jane, and Sarah. She was proceeded in death by her son, Mark Long.
