Shirley was born on February 17, 1938 in Cushing, Oklahoma to Robert and Louise Mizer. While in high school, she met the love of her life, Virgil L. Garrett and they married on March 15, 1955. Their son Virgil Wesley was born in December of 1955. Shirley graduated from Central High School in May of 1956. She then welcomed daughter, Vickie Jo on June 12, 1958. In 1959 the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Shirley and Virgil had a close-knit group of friends with whom they enjoyed dancing and having a fun time. Shirley sadly lost her husband Virgil at the young age of 38 in 1975. She was blessed with love again with Emerson Peck and they married on August 23, 1980. Shirley found herself in Texas in 1983 after Emerson was transferred through Ford Motor Company. She started back to school and finished her bachelor’s degree in accounting at the University of Texas at Dallas in 1985. After working for a company for a few years she decided to venture off and start her own accounting firm. Shirley lost her second love Emerson on May 5, 2002. Shirley loved traveling, shopping, and gambling. She was quick witted and always loved to laugh.
Shirley is survived by her son, Virgil W. Garrett of Arlington, Texas; daughter Vickie Leon and husband Gerardo of Arlington, TX; grandchildren Christopher Garrett of Grand Prairie, TX, Scott Garrett of Arlington, TX, Alex Leon of Arlington, Texas, and Cassandra Gonzalez of Lexington Park, MD; great-grandchildren Isaac Leon, Dominic Gonzalez, Colton Garrett, Olivia Gonzalez, Cadyn Garrett, Ava Garrett, and Adalyn Garrett; and brother-in-law Jerry Garrett and wife VC of Tulsa, OK.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Louise Mizer; husband Virgil L. Garrett; husband Emerson Peck; and sister Joan Lehr.
A memorial celebrating Shirley’s life will be held at 2pm on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Moore and Sons Funeral Home, 1219 N. Davis Dr., Arlington, TX 76012.
