

Verna Simpson, of Arlington, Texas, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2026, in Irving, Texas. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, artist, singer, teacher, aunt, sister, friend, and Omi to all who knew and loved her.
She was born on May 28, 1956 in Texarkana, Texas, to the late Haskell and Gladys Sowell.
Verna loved the Lord and dedicated her life to making sure that her family had a deep personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She worked in youth camps, served as a youth director, sang on the worship team, and taught children's church.
Verna was a retired teacher with 32 years in special education. Educating students with special needs was a deep passion and calling for her. Yet, her greatest fulfillment came from painting and drawing, raising her two sons, and being the best Omi to her grandsons, Joshua and Luke.
Verna is survived by her oldest son, Christopher Simpson, of Arlington, Texas; her youngest son, Daniel Simpson, and daughter-in-law, Kayla Simpson, of Arlington, Texas; her sister, Judy Tackett, and brother-in-law, Alvin Tackett, of Weiner, Arkansas; her brother, Rickie Sowell, and sister-in-law, Deborah Sowell, of San Antonio, Texas; her niece, Bonnie Barnett, and her husband, O'Neal Barnett; her niece, Sondra Floyd; her nephews, Levi Tackett and Nathaniel Tackett; her great-nephews, Drew Barnett and Noah Barnett; and her grandsons, Joshua Simpson and Luke Simpson.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ola Mae and Ray Wyant, and her parents, Haskell and Gladys Sowell.
No viewing will be held prior to the funeral service.
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Moore Funeral Home.
